You will need some type of hip
scarf. Any piece of cloth that will tie comfortably around your hips will
work. It helps the instructor to focus quickly on student's hips in class,
and helps you isolate your hip movement. In the second four weeks you will be
encouraged to purchase a coin scarf, so if you decided to buy something now
you may want to consider that as an option. Our studio store Pangaea Souk
will always have some colors available for purchase, but for great pricing
and any shape, size and color you could try online vendors
and defiantly check out eBay!
Leggings and a crop/exercise top is the best
attire for belly dance practice. However, many students are not comfortable
showing their bellies, so some students prefer to wear a tee-shirt or
leotard, and leggings or slim cut pajama bottoms (doesn't have to be tight,
but not baggy).
Although some dancers perform in high heels.
Our studio prefers a more traditional and earthy approach to the dance, and
so we encourage bare feet or sole-less jazz shoes. If you are very
uncomfortable in bare feet you may wear any type of leather bottom slippers
(any store brand bed slipper will do).
We will begin working with
zills or sagat right from the first week of Beginner 2, so you will want to
get a pair as early as possible. Zills will be available for sale in class or
you can order them online. DO NOT buy zills with only one hole on each
cymbal. Look for two wide slits in each zill. These are much easier to
play, and are all we ever use. A nice pair of student zills (which may be all
you will ever need even if you plan to perform) will cost between $17 and
$25. Mini zills which are easier to use at first, but will need to be
replaced for performance will cost about $15 before shipping and handling.
Any common online store is good, but if you'd like to try the zills before buying
we recommend either buying from Pangaea Souk or from Le Shoppe on University
Ave. and First St. Cindy, the owner of Le Shoppe, is both a sweetie and a
fellow dancer - two great reasons to giver her you business.
The Pangaea Dance Co. consists
of the Reflections Troupe and serves also as Level III (the advanced level
choreography element of our dance program). We are focused on producing a
repertoire of performance level pieces which highlight the artistic
expression of women's truth through dance, and providing dancers with an
opportunity to grow as performers through experience on stage and with the
medium of choreography.
Members of the Reflections troupe work
together to create new choreographies as well as learn already established
works. Individuals are also encouraged to form smaller groups, such as trios,
duets, and solos, to establishing their own choreographies as offerings to
the troupe's repertoire.
Dancers who wishes to join The Reflections is
expected to have completed at minimum a twelve week series in basic Middle
Eastern dance at a dance studio, and to continue their dance education
through classes, seminars, video, and online study. All members are
encouraged and expected to both contribute to the group through establishing
and working toward their own dance goals, as well as participating in the
group creative process. It is not required that members attend Pangaea Dance
classes, but class attendance somewhere is mandatory. The group maintains a
performance schedule and although members are encouraged to choose only those
performances that fit into their schedule, once they have committed to a show,
members are expected to arrive early and prepared. Members should expect to
attend class regularly if they desire to perform in upcoming shows. Please
contact our Office Goddess
to inquire about joining.
